Former Bungoma Governor Wycliffe Wangamati has urged Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP-K) leader Eugene Wamalwa to ditch his presidential ambitions and instead rally behind Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna’s presidential bid.

Speaking during an interview with a local media station on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, the former Bungoma governor reaffirmed his support for the Nairobi senator, saying Sifuna is now the country’s darling and that Wamalwa should rally behind him.

“I urge Wamalwa to ditch his political ambitions and support Edwin Sifuna for his presidential seat,” Wangamati stated.

Wangamati, who aligned himself with the Linda Mwananchi movement after announcing his exit from the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP), stated that he will campaign in every part of Bungoma County while urging locals to rally behind their son.

This comes at a time when there are massive defections from other parties as politicians continue aligning themselves with the Sifuna-led Linda Mwananchi movement. They have also announced that they are ready to join the political party that the Nairobi senator is expected to form soon so that they can all use it as their vehicle for the 2027 general election.

Wanyonyi aligns with Sifuna

The latest leader to align with Edwin Sifuna’s movement is Westlands MP Timothy Wanyonyi, who endorsed the former Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Secretary General for the country’s top seat while also marketing his upcoming homecoming in Bungoma County.

On the other hand, Sifuna has expressed confidence in the calibre of leaders aligning themselves with his movement, which began as a faction within ODM. He said he is confident that the next Bungoma governor will come from the Linda Mwananchi movement.

Other notable Bungoma politicians who have decamped to Linda Mwananchi include Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya, who, despite harbouring regional and national political ambitions, shelved them and announced that he is fully behind Edwin Sifuna. Natembeya has vowed to campaign in every part of Western Kenya to popularise Sifuna’s presidential bid.

Other leaders who have joined the movement include former Bungoma Deputy Governor Charles Ngome and former Kanduyi MP Wafula Wamunyinyi, who also decamped from DAP-K and aligned himself with Sifuna.

Natembeya mocks DAP-K

Natembeya recently mocked the current state of DAP-K, saying the party has become a shell of its former self and stands little chance of remaining politically relevant ahead of the 2027 general election.

However, Mumias East MP Peter Salasya remains the only MP who has firmly stood with DAP-K. He has vowed to continue rallying behind the former defence cabinet secretary, declaring that Eugene Wamalwa remains the region’s political kingpin and urging Western Kenya residents to rally behind his presidential ambitions.

Wamalwa, on his idea in the past, had declared that if Edwin Sifuna had a better chance of becoming Kenya’s president, he would shelve his own presidential ambitions and rally behind the Linda Mwananchi team leader.

While speaking during an interview on Herman Manyora’s podcast aired on Friday, May 16, 2026, Wamalwa, when asked by the host whether he is ready to shelve his presidential ambitions in support of his kinsman Edwin Sifuna, responded by saying, “Why not?”
