Chatterbox Collective

Written and directed by John ‘JJ’ Jumbi, the Chatterbox Collective presented Lwanda Rockman, a modern interpretation of the classic story of the life of folklore legend Lwanda Magere. The play featured dancers and appreciated live music throughout the play that was hosted in June last year at the Kenya National Theatre in Nairobi.

Zzero Sufuri

The Zimenishika hitmaker did enjoy a blissful year in 2019. The encouraging public reception to his club bangers hit including Matiati, Matisha, Kashike and Chuki Doa was something that pointed to great things to come for the young artiste. His unique approach in music; dancehall with small elements of mumble rap, is a big plus for him.

BV Accurate

His breakout song Enjoyment  was one of the top songs last year. He had an interesting last quarter of 2019 with his zeal and hype. Fans will for sure keep their eyes on him.

Matata

Matata is a fresh gengetone group that recently released a song titled Mare Mare featuring rapper Lamaz Span KOB. The group consists of Marcus, Freddy, Richie, Festus and Ken. They also dropped an interesting visual showing off their mad choreography and humorous creativity, leaving fans begging to see more of them, and this year could be theirs for the taking.

Ochungulo Family

Their diversity and their unpredictable approach to music might make them fly high this year. The gengetone artistes blew off the roofs in 2019 with hits such as Chachisha, Aluta, Na Iwake, Kirimino and Kaa na Mama Yako. Hopefully, we will get more hits this year.

Sol Generation

Last year, Sauti Sol unveiled their recording label Sol Generation Records, under which they unveiled a few artistes including Nviiri, Bensoul, Kaskazini and Crystal Asige. They all released solo projects and they did quite well in the music game, especially with their breakout collabo hit track Extravaganza. We will for sure keep close tabs on them in 2020.

Pitson and Karura Voices

Known for hits such as Lingala ya Yesu, Wacha Niimbe and Mtu wa Maana, 2020 will be another grand year for him. Last year, he worked on solo projects including an album with the Karura Voices. The album has been in rotation and we only hope they will deliver more of the good music stuff this year.

Moji Shortbabaa

James Muhia aka Moji Shortbabaa has broken away from the wave and set his standards in the gospel music space. In 2019, the former one half of the Kelele Takatifu music duo released his debut solo album Yesu Mtaani, which has been doing well in the music charts. He is one man to lookout for this year.

Mbithi Masya

Mbithi came to prominence as part of an experimental art collective called Just A Band. Their 2011 video installation, Kudishnyao!, was commissioned by the Goethe-Institut and exhibited at New York’s Rush Gallery in 2012. Building on this exposure, his first feature film, Kati Kati, premiered at the 2016 Toronto International Film Festival. This multi-talented creative is also well known in Kenya for directing music videos. We predict that this will be his year to conquer all.

Flaqoo

Flaqo Raz is a jack of all trades. He is a dancer, comedian and singer. He started doing his comedy in August last year as a passion, but his content started going viral. One of the videos that helped him garner recognition and followers was the one where he imitated Eko Dydda and Khaligraph Jones praying for food. His talent is expected to blow up proper this year and he can’t rest knowing all the yeyes will be on him.
