‘This was a state-sponsored attack and abduction’ – Kalonzo speaks on former MP Peter Mwathi’s arrest
Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has condemned the chaotic scenes that unfolded during a funeral in Limuru, Kiambu County, and the reported abduction of former Limuru MP Peter Mwathi and local MCA Christopher Ireri.
Speaking at the SKM Command Centre on Saturday, November 30, 2024, Kalonzo described the events as a state-sponsored attack and called on Kenyans to unite against such incidents.
The chaos erupted on Thursday, November 28, at the funeral of 23-year-old Erastus Nduati in Bibironi village, Limuru. According to Kalonzo, thugs infiltrated the gathering, causing panic and forcing mourners, including the deceased’s family, to flee.
According to Kalonzo, several people sustained injuries, with some requiring medical attention. He said the attackers targeted individuals perceived to be critical of the Kenya Kwanza administration.
Kalonzo said that Peter Mwathi and Christopher Ireri were abducted during the incident. According to the opposition leader, witnesses claim they were forcibly taken by unidentified men driving Subarus. The two were later abandoned near the Southern Bypass, many kilometres away from the funeral venue. Mwathi was found unhurt, while Ireri is currently receiving treatment at a hospital in Kiambu.
“To compound an already dire situation, area MCA Christorpher Ireri and former Limuru MP Peter Mwathi were abducted and unceremoniously bundled into Subarus by unidentified men before being abandoned near the Southern bypass at around 11:00PM, many kilometres away from Bibironi village,” Kalonzo stated.
Kalonzo accused the government of deliberately orchestrating the violence and abductions as a tactic to suppress dissenting voices.
“Despite the statements from both the inspector General of the National Police Service (NPS), Mr. Douglas Kanja, and the Director of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), Mr. Mohamed Amin, that the chaos was due to “a lack of advanced intelligence” and that Hon. Mwathi and Hon, Ireri were not in their custody, ladies and gentlemen, the evidence is irrefutable: this was a state-sponsored attack and abductions,” Kalonzo declared.
Adding;
“Han. Mwathi is here with us today and Hon Ireri is in hospital in Kiambu. They will tell the country their harrowing night of terror with the State Sponsored Abduction Squad.”
Kalonzo called on all Kenyans to condemn what he termed as state-sponsored terrorism and defend the nation’s democratic values. He emphasized the need for unity in opposing actions that threaten the freedom and security of citizens.
“A terrorist attack on one Kenyan is an attack on all of us regardless of race, ethnic community, and political persuasion. An abduction of one of us is an affront to all who believe in a free and democratic society. We therefore call upon all Kenyans, irrespective of ethnicity and political persuasion, to call out this rogue regime and, in one accord, say no more state sponsored terrorism,” Kalonzo stated.
Earlier this afternoon, I held a Media Briefing at the SKM Command Centre, together with The People's Loyal Opposition Team.
