At least 10 people have been killed in Nairobi since Monday, following the heavy rains experienced in the city.

Police, however, warn that the number could be higher as some people have been reported missing.

Three of the victims include a woman and her two children who were killed in Mathare, Starehe Sub-county, when a boulder crushed their house following the heavy rains.

Nairobi Region Police Commander George Sedah said a nearby river overflowed, weakening the structure and causing the rock to collapse onto the house opposite, killing the three as they slept.

Sedah said the residents had been evicted from the affected areas, adding that a team of officers had been mobilised to conduct search and rescue operations in the area.

Officials said in the city’s Mukuru Kwa Reuben slums, one person died after being swept away by floods.

Pauline Syombua reported that his brother, Jeffars Ng’oa, 20, was being ferried by a motorist from Devani to his residence and when they attempted to cross Ngong River and were both swept away.

The rider was rescued, but Ng’oa drowned. The body was later spotted floating on the same river near Jamaica village within Lunga Lunga.

More than 500 residents were displaced by the sudden flooding, police said. Two more bodies were recovered from different parts of Nairobi after being swept away by floods.

One person was found dead after drowning in the Ngong River at Likoni Bridge in South B. Police later identified him as John Sendeu, an employee of Home Bakery company.

The second body was retrieved from floodwaters on Jogoo Road.

Mukuru slums residents have blamed the Nairobi County Government for ignoring the recurring flood disasters in the area, a year after making several promises following deadly floods that caused massive destruction.

The Kenya Meteorological Department had predicted that showers and thunderstorms would continue for the remaining part of the weekend.

Most parts of the country are experiencing rain.
