State moves to seal leaky tax loopholes with new system

The government through the Ministry of Lands has embarked on a new system to seal loopholes through which people evade paying taxes in the purchase and sale of land.
According to Cabinet Secretary for Lands Alice Wahome, all her Ministry officers have been sensitized and instructed to implement the new system that seeks to help the government fund public services and enhance service delivery.
Speaking in Thika after an impromptu meeting at the land’s registry, the CS regretted that tax evasion and distorted tax structures have been the greatest impediment in her ministry’s quest to meet its revenue targets.
“We have agreed that we are going to double the revenue and that we are going to streamline the valuation of all documents requiring valuation between registrars and valuers in every station.
In Thika for instance, we collected Sh 86 million in 2023, if we work better, we will double this amount by the close of 2024/2025 financial year,” stated the CS.
