Showers and thunderstorms: Kenya Met lists areas set to receive heavy rainfall in 5-day forecast
The Kenya Meteorological Department (Kenya Met) has hinted at the return of short but heavy rainfall by listing over 20 counties set to experience the showers.
According to the weather advisory, rainfall is expected over a few places from Saturday, October 19, 2024, to Wednesday, October 23, 2024.
The rain is expected to be accompanied by thunderstorms in the morning, and afternoon before transitioning to evening.
“Rainfall is expected over the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin and the Rift Valley as well as over a few areas in the South-eastern lowlands, North-western and North-eastern Kenya,” Kenya Met announced in the general outlook report.
“Isolated heavy rainfall events may occur over some parts of the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley and North-western Kenya,” the advisory added.
Nairobi and surrounding counties
Kenya Met has advised Nairobi residents and its neighbouring areas to brace for heavy rainfall. According to the advisory, showers are expected on Saturday morning, afternoon and in the evening.
Other counties within the Highlands East of the Rift Valley set to experience similar weather for the five days as Nairobi include Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu and Tharaka Nithi.
With the rains expected, residents have been advised to dress warmly and motorists to drive carefully due to chances of reduced visibility, especially in the morning.
Western counties
Heavy rainfall is also expected over a few areas in the western counties which fall in the Highlands West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, and the Rift Valley region.
Siaya, Kisumu, Homabay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet, Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia and West Pokot Counties have all been listed in the areas within the region set to experience rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms.
Coastal counties
The coastal counties ((Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu and Kwale Counties as well as coastal parts of Tana River) are expected to enjoy intervals of sunshine.
According to the weatherman, the chances of rainfall in those counties are very minimal except on Tuesday and Wednesday.
The same weather condition is expected in the South-eastern lowlands (Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado and Taita Taveta counties as well as inland parts of Tana River County).
