Senator Mundigi pesters Ruto to come clean on plans to build airport in Embu

Embu Senator Alexander Mundigi has publicly appealed to President William Ruto to clarify whether the government has any intention of constructing an airport in Embu County, as development demands from local leaders in the region continue to intensify.
Speaking during a church service at the ACK Diocese of Embu on Sunday, July 6, 2025, Senator Mundigi said it was time for the county to be granted an operational airport, noting that residents in the region have waited long enough for the kind of infrastructural investment being rolled out in other counties.
“We now want you to give us an airport. You can see all these people here would desire it. The one currently available is for security operations, and we are pleading with you because we have observed that other counties, even those with only rocky land, are being considered for airports. We also must have one,” he said.
The senator further argued that Embu deserves such a facility not only because of its historical standing as part of the former Eastern Province but also due to its geographical placement within the Mount Kenya region.
“This was once referred to as the Eastern Province, and the Mount Kenya region is also here. Therefore, we are asking you to consider us,” he added.
Senator Mundigi revealed that Embu leaders are dreaming big and hope to transform the county into a city in the coming years, citing examples like Eldoret and Homa Bay, which have witnessed significant elevation through targeted investment.
Elevate Embu to city status
He said the president should also make it a priority to elevate the Cecily Mbarire-led county to city status, adding that he is praying to God to grant Ruto another term in government so that he may fulfil the aspirations that the leaders have placed upon him.
“In the coming years, we want Embu to become a city. Our President, we are praying for you to serve ten full years in government. We are asking that within that time, you uplift the economy of Embu. We want a city like Eldoret and those others, such as Homa Bay. Kindly place us on the front line,” he urged.

He went on to highlight the financial constraints faced by the devolved unit, adding that allocations from the exchequer are insufficient to implement transformative projects at the county level.
He said they also want the president to maintain a strong working relationship with Governor Mbarire so that even with the minimal budgetary allocations they receive, the county may at least enjoy the advantage of securing some projects directly through presidential support.
“The county funds are far too limited, so we are appealing to you to collaborate with our governor and find ways of transforming this county,” he said.
