President William Ruto has described the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) as a powerful affirmation of Pan-Africanism, saying the tournament showcased the unity and resilience of the continent.

In a statement posted on his X account on Saturday, August 30, 2025, Ruto congratulated Morocco for lifting the CHAN 2024 title and commended the organisers, players, and fans for delivering what he termed an unforgettable championship.

“Congratulations, Morocco, on winning the CHAN 2024 Championship. This is a well-earned victory,” Ruto declared.

African solidarity

The Head of State underscored that the significance of CHAN 2024 extended beyond football results, framing it as a celebration of African solidarity and excellence.

“Beyond the competition, CHAN 2024 has affirmed the spirit of Pan-Africanism. It has showcased the unity, resilience, and immense talent of our continent,” he stated.

Ruto highlighted how the tournament brought together diverse cultures and nations, noting that the packed stands and vibrant displays symbolised Africa’s shared aspirations.

“From North to South, East to West, Africa’s sons and daughters displayed not only footballing brilliance but also the bonds that tie us together as one people,” he added.

Lessons for AFCON 2027

The President further disclosed that Kenya would draw lessons from co-hosting CHAN 2024 to sharpen its preparations for hosting the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

“We take to heart the lessons of co-hosting this tournament, and we will use them to sharpen our preparation for AFCON 2027,” he affirmed.

Ruto concluded by reflecting on CHAN 2024 as a celebration of African excellence, saying the tournament reinforced the belief that the continent’s future is brightest when united.

“This celebration of African excellence reminds us that our future is brightest when we stand together,” he noted.

CHAN finals

The final match, played on Saturday, saw Morocco narrowly defeat Madagascar 3-2 in a dramatic clash at Kasarani International Stadium.

Madagascar, making their first-ever appearance in a CHAN final, went ahead through Félicité Mantasoa before Morocco equalised through Youssef Mehri and took the lead with Oussama Lamlaoui’s strike before half-time.

In the second half, Toky Rakotondraibe brought Madagascar back to level terms, but Morocco sealed the victory late in the game with a decisive goal from Oussama Lamlilioui, clinching their third CHAN title.

The finals were graced by FIFA President Gianni Infantino and CAF President Patrice Motsepe, among other key leaders.
