President William Ruto has reaffirmed his unwavering commitment to Kenya’s Affordable Housing Programme, declaring that he is ready to pay any price to ensure the country’s transformation and provide decent shelter for all.

Speaking on Tuesday, 17 June 2025, during the Second Kenya Urban Forum held in Naivasha, Nakuru County, Ruto said urbanisation is rapidly reshaping Kenya’s demographic landscape and called for bold, strategic planning to manage the shift.

“Our country is rapidly urbanising, with an annual growth rate of 4.3 per cent. By 2050, half of our population will reside in towns and cities,” Ruto noted.

Urban growth challenge

To address the housing challenge posed by this rapid urban growth, the President highlighted the Affordable Housing Programme as a central pillar of his government’s long-term plan.

“We are implementing bold and strategic measures to shape this urban future, ensuring that every Kenyan has access to planned, dignified, and decent housing,” he said. “The Affordable Housing Programme, with a pipeline of more than 700,000 units, is at the heart of this transformation.”

Beyond housing, Ruto framed the programme as a tool to eradicate slums, generate employment, and stimulate economic growth through construction and manufacturing.

Critics face rebuttal

In a passionate off-the-cuff speech, the President dismissed critics of the programme as dishonest opportunists who once supported the initiative but are now undermining it for political gain.

“A lie will always keep you changing shoes, but the truth is stubborn,” he said. “Truth will always walk barefoot. Continue walking barefoot, continue building for Kenyans.”

He encouraged his administration and supporters not to be distracted by political noise, urging them to stay the course and deliver results.

Promise of delivery

“I am a man of faith. And I am willing to pay the price, whatever it is, to make sure that we transform this country and we house as many Kenyans as possible,” Ruto affirmed.

The President concluded with a blessing, declaring his intention to deliver 700,000 homes within the next decade as a legacy project for future generations.
