Ruto hails strong Kenya-Ukraine relations as he bids farewell to envoy
President William Ruto has reaffirmed Kenya’s long-standing ties with Ukraine spanning over three decades, as he bid farewell to outgoing Ukrainian Ambassador Andril Pravednyk at State House, Nairobi.
In a statement posted on his X account on August 26, 2025, Ruto reflected on the bilateral relationship between the two countries, noting the diverse areas of cooperation that have developed since diplomatic relations were established.
“Diplomatic relations between Kenya and Ukraine go back more than 30 years, cementing cooperation between our two countries in various areas,” Ruto stated.
The head of state detailed the key areas of trade cooperation between Kenya and Ukraine, highlighting the mutual exchange of agricultural products and commodities.
“They include trade in grains, especially wheat and maize, and fertilisers from Ukraine. On its part, Kenya exports tea, coffee, flowers and cabbages,” he explained.
Kenya’s stance
In his statement, Ruto acknowledged the far-reaching effects of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, particularly on global supply chains that affect countries like Kenya.
“The effects of the war in Ukraine, now in its fourth year, have been felt far and wide, especially in the disruption of supply chains of grains, fuel and fertilisers,” he noted.
Ruto reiterated Kenya’s principled stance on the Ukraine war, emphasising the country’s commitment to international law and the peaceful resolution of conflicts.
“Our position on the war has been clear: We strongly believe in the UN Charter, and especially on national sovereignty and territorial integrity,” Ruto stated.
“In addition, it is our firm view that dialogue, not war, is the path to peace and an end to hostilities,” he declared.

Presidential message
Ruto also revealed that outgoing Ambassador Pravednyk conveyed a goodwill message from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
“The ambassador brought a goodwill message from President Volodymyr Zelensky,” Ruto disclosed.
