Plans are moving swiftly as former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s grave was dug on Thursday evening, October 16, 2025, shortly after public viewing at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.

Images of Odinga’s final resting point at his Bondo home, Siaya County, where the late opposition leader will be laid to rest on Sunday, October 19, 2025, started circulating.

Earlier, after landing at Raila Odinga’s home, Siaya Senator and Raila’s elder brother, Oburu Odinga, announced that the former Prime Minister will be laid to rest near his father, Kenya’s first Vice President Jaramogi Oginga Odinga’s mausoleum in a private ceremony.

”We will give Raila a dignified send-off which he deserves, as a dignified son of this land. The programme will end with a burial ceremony at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology, and then later on, Raila will be buried next to our mum and dad…in a private burial (ceremony) which will be attended only by a few people,” Oburu said on Thursday, October 16, 2025.

Kisumu body viewing

Meanwhile, Raila Odinga’s public viewing in Kisumu has been moved from Moi Stadium to Jomo Kenyatta Stadium in Mamboleo on Saturday, October 18, 2025. This comes as part of a last-minute change, as the viewing had earlier been scheduled to take place at Moi Stadium, Kisumu, but has now been transferred to Jomo Kenyatta Stadium in Mamboleo.

The body of the former Prime Minister is also scheduled for a state funeral at Nyayo Stadium on Friday, October 17, 2025. After the funeral, the body is to be taken to his Karen home before being flown directly to Kisumu, where residents of the Nyanza region who have supported him since the start of his political career and that of his father, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, would have the opportunity to pay their final respects.

At the same time, the State House has officially opened the condolence book for mourners to pay their last tributes to former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, who died on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, while undergoing treatment in India.

Shortly after leading the nation in public viewing of Raila Odinga’s body at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, President William Ruto rushed to the State House, Nairobi, to open the signing of the condolence book on Thursday evening, October 16, 2025. This is one among other activities laid out by the government to reflect on the life and times of Raila Odinga.
