PS Daghar says Mombasa rail link to be ready in two months

Principal Secretary in the State Department of Transport Mohamed Daghar yesterday assured the public commuter rail linking the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) terminus in Miritini to the Mombasa CBD will be ready for use in two months time.
According to the PS, commuters will start using the newly refurbished railway by May a move he said will decongest the port area road network by reducing traffic, ensuring seamless connectivity to Miritini.
Daghar announced yesterday that the SGR terminus will be connected to commuter meter gauge railway (MGR) to allow travelers to board at the Mombasa terminus.
The PS said the government has completed procuring a 1.4 acre piece of land through the help of the National Land Commission (NCL) at the section of the railway line that had been a stumbling block to completion of the project.
“When they reach (SGR) they will be able to connect, we had a problem of acquiring 1.4 kilometer land, I am happy to announce that problem has been completed and in May this year we will be ready to roll,” said Daghar.
The completion of the connectivity network will also pave the way for construction of four passenger pickup and drop stations to facilitate movement of passengers from Mombasa Island to Changamwe area and environs through train services.
“We are building four stations one at Miritini,Changamwe East and West and the last station will be at Shimanzi, we will put many trains beginning at 6am and also in the night, so that those going to work in Changamwe can move by train,” said Daghar.
This initiative will see passengers intending to use the Madaraka Express Passenger Service travel via train from the Old Mombasa Station along Mijikenda Road to Mombasa Terminus in Miritini.
