Police seize 6,000 litres of illicit brew in Nyamira

Police officers in Nyamira County have dealt a significant blow to the local manufacture of illicit alcohol following a successful raid in Manga Sub-County.

In a statement on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, the National Police Service (NPS) confirmed the arrest of a man linked to the manufacture of the illicit brew in the region.

“Acting on intelligence, a team of officers from the Omogonchoro Police Patrol Base under the Sengera Police Station command launched a targeted crackdown in the Kiomakondo area of Getare Location,” NPS said.

During the raid, the officers seized 780 litres of Chang’aa, fully processed and packaged into 20-litre jerrycans, and 5,530 litres of Kangara, which the police say were destroyed on site.

“During the operation, the officers apprehended a notorious local manufacturer. The raid resulted in the seizure of illicit brews, including: 780 litres of Chang’aa, fully processed and packaged into 20-litre jerrycans, and 5,530 litres of Kangara, which was destroyed on-site,” NPS said.

The person of interest was later escorted to the station and placed in custody, awaiting processing and arraignment in court.

Meanwhile, the recovered Chang’aa was secured at the station as an exhibit.

“This successful operation underscores the NPS’s ongoing commitment to eradicating the menace of illicit brews, which threaten the health and safety of our communities. The crackdown remains active and will continue until these illegal networks are completely dismantled,” NPS said.

Kisumu crackdown

The arrest in Nyamira comes days after Police Officers in Kisumu and Bungoma Counties destroyed at least 3,200 litres of Kangara in a multi-agency operation against illicit brews.

In a statement by NPS on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, the officers confirmed that the operation is part of ongoing efforts to eliminate illegal alcohol dens across various parts of the Country.

Further explaining the immediate action by the government in ensuring that those endangering lives through the illegal alcohol trade are brought to justice.

“Yesterday, a multi-agency team conducted a successful operation against illicit brews in the Mitua area of Bungoma North Sub-County, as part of ongoing efforts to eliminate illegal alcohol dens and ensure that those endangering lives through the illegal alcohol trade are brought to justice,” NPS stated.

During the operation in Bungoma County, the Officers destroyed approximately 3,200 litres of kangara.

An activity that the officers said demonstrates the scale of the problem and equally highlights the decisive stance taken by all agencies involved in dealing firmly with offenders.
