The National Police Service (NPS) has issued a safety advisory following heavy rains witnessed in various parts of the country, urging members of the public to exercise caution.

In a statement on Wednesday, April 29, 2026, the Service announced that the government remains on high alert as persistent heavy rains continue to affect several parts of the country.

“The National Police Service, in coordination with other government agencies, remains on high alert as persistent heavy rains continue to affect several parts of the country,” NPS announced.

According to NPS, the situation has already caused significant disruption and damage, underscoring the severity of the ongoing weather conditions and the need for heightened public vigilance.

Nairobi flood risk

The police stated that the situation within Nairobi is further exacerbated by rapidly rising water levels in major rivers, including the Nairobi, Mathare, Ngong, Kamiti and Athi rivers.

NPS further explained that Nairobi, Mathare, Ngong, and Kamiti waterways all drain into the larger Athi River system, which is currently running at critically high levels.

As a result, communities downstream face a heightened risk of flooding, even in areas where rainfall may appear minimal.

Hence, according to the Service, the downstream effect makes the situation particularly unpredictable and dangerous; therefore, special caution should be exercised in relation to flash floods, which NPS says can develop rapidly and without warning, often catching people off guard.

Transport networks are under increasing strain, with several critical routes at risk of becoming impassable. In addition, poor visibility, waterlogged surfaces and uncertain road conditions are significantly increasing the risk of accidents for all road users.

Public warning

Given these conditions, the public is strongly urged to exercise extreme caution at all times by avoiding driving through or walking in moving water, as even shallow currents can be deceptively strong and capable of sweeping away vehicles or individuals.

The public is further encouraged to take proactive measures to safeguard themselves and their families. Residents in flood-prone areas should be prepared to relocate to higher ground without delay if advised to do so.

Staying informed through regular updates from the Kenya Meteorological Department and local authorities is essential.

The Police have further urged members of the public to watch out for Community alerts and that evacuation instructions must be followed promptly and without hesitation, as delays can place lives at greater risk.

“The National Police Service remains vigilant and reaffirms its commitment to safeguarding lives and property. The public can reach us on our emergency lines: 999 or 911. Members of the public may also report incidents,” NPS said.
