Police officers from the Mayenje Police Post in Busia County have intercepted a drug consignment after the key persons of interest fled the scene, leaving behind a motorcycle.

In a statement by the NPS on X on Friday, April 3, 2026, the police confirmed that the consignment was intercepted during a Thursday evening routine patrol along the Mayenje–Bulanda Road.

“In line with the unwavering commitment of the National Police Service to curb drug trafficking and protect communities from the harmful effects of narcotics, police officers from Mayenje Police Post in Busia County yesterday successfully intercepted a consignment of suspected illegal drugs during a routine patrol along the Mayenje–Bulanda Road,” NPS said.

According to the police, while on patrol, the officers identified and stopped a motorcycle suspected of transporting illicit goods.

However, on noticing the police, both the rider and the pillion passenger abandoned the motorcycle and fled the scene on foot, evading arrest but leaving behind the suspected narcotics.

“A thorough search of the abandoned load led to the recovery of a substance suspected to be cannabis sativa. The substance was neatly packaged in two separate consignments and wrapped in yellow cello tape, indicating possible preparation for distribution,” NPS said.

Meanwhile, all recovered exhibits, including the motorcycle and the suspected narcotics, have since been secured at Busia Police Station for safe custody, documentation, and further forensic analysis. Investigations are ongoing as police intensify efforts to trace and apprehend the suspects.
