Police in the Majengo area in Nanyuki town arrested one person of interest and recovered 400 litres of suspected chang’aa, stored in 20 yellow plastic containers. During the raid, police also arrested 150 packets of assorted, uncustomised cigarettes that were counterfeit.

Taking it to their X handle on Monday, February 9, 2026, the National Police Service (NPS) has said that the crackdown on illicit alcohol and narcotics has intensified, leading to the arrest of the person of interest.

“During the raid, the team arrested one suspect and recovered 400 litres of suspected chang’aa, stored in 20 yellow plastic containers. Additionally, 150 packets of assorted, uncustomized Super Match cigarettes were seized,” NPS stated.

The NPS has also said that police officers from Nanyuki Police Station, under the command of the Sub-County Police Commander, conducted a targeted operation against illicit alcohol in the Majengo area and its environs within Laikipia East Sub-County, leading to the arrest.

The person of interest was taken to Nanyuki Police Station and is scheduled to be arraigned in court, while the recovered items are set to be secured as evidence during the court hearings.

Police to sustain crackdown

The National Police Service has said that similar operations are ongoing as the police intensify efforts to curb the manufacture, distribution, and sale of illicit alcohol and other illegal drugs that have been rampant, especially in slum areas of major towns.

The Service has further called on the members of the public to continue sharing information with the police to end the cases of illicit brews and drug trafficking.
