Police bust cannabis haul, arrest 2 in Vihiga crackdown
The National Police Service (NPS) has stepped up its fight against drug trafficking after officers intercepted a consignment of cannabis in Vihiga County.
In a statement shared on its official social media pages on Saturday, March 21, 2026, the NPS said officers from Cheptulu Police Station carried out a successful operation in the Sigongo area along the Chavakali–Kapsabet road.
The officers stopped a public service vehicle during the operation and conducted a search, leading to the recovery of fourteen bales of a substance believed to be cannabis sativa. The drugs had been wrapped in yellow cellotape and hidden inside two nylon sacks.
Police detained the vehicle and arrested two persons of interest, who are now in custody awaiting arraignment in court.
The NPS said the seizure highlights the importance of alert policing and intelligence-led operations in tackling the movement of illegal drugs across the country.
“This incident underscores the critical role of vigilance, intelligence-led operations and routine inspections in preventing the movement of illegal substances,” the service said.
Authorities also pointed to the continued presence of organised drug networks, warning that more coordinated efforts are needed to break them.
“It also highlights the persistence of drug trafficking networks and the need for sustained, coordinated efforts to dismantle them,” the statement added.

Recent anti-drug crackdowns intensify
The Vihiga operation comes just days after a similar crackdown in Migori County, where police arrested a person of interest linked to 95 rolls of bhang.
According to an earlier report by the NPS, officers from Kamagambo Police Station, working with the National Government Administration Officers (NGAO), carried out a targeted raid in Rongo Town on March 18, 2026.
“Following credible leads from members of the public, officers… undertook an operation to address suspected illegal drug activity within the Showground area of Rongo Town,” the NPS said in that case.
During the raid, officers searched a house and recovered the rolls of cannabis, before arresting the suspect and taking him into custody.
Police said the Migori operation showed the value of working closely with the public in fighting crime.
In another recent case, detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) arrested two men in Machakos County after intercepting a vehicle carrying narcotics.
The Anti-Narcotics Unit acted on intelligence and mounted an early morning operation in the Ng’alalya area of Joska, where they seized a large consignment believed to be illegal drugs.
“A well-coordinated intelligence-driven operation… has dealt a significant blow to a narcotics trafficking ring,” the DCI said.
