Peter Mbae blames govt over Utumishi Girls fire and vows action
The secretary for planning and economic affairs in the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), Peter Mbae, has described the deadly fire tragedy at Utumishi Girls’ Academy in Gilgil as a clear case of government negligence, vowing to pursue legal action against those responsible.
Speaking in a morning interview with a local radio station on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, Mbae accused the government of failing in its duty to protect learners and ensure safety standards in schools across the country.
“The Utumishi Academy tragedy is a case of pure government negligence. We are going to sue the government from top to bottom. We have already instructed our lawyers because it values money more than life,” Mbae said.

Mbae has argued that the tragedy could have been prevented if the relevant authorities had taken adequate measures to enforce safety regulations and improve emergency preparedness in learning institutions. He called for accountability from government officials and institutions tasked with overseeing school safety.
Call for parental guidance
The DCP official has, in addition, called for a broader national conversation on parenting and the role families play in shaping children’s values and behaviour.
According to Mbae, while government agencies must be held accountable for ensuring safe learning environments, parents also have a responsibility to instil discipline, responsibility, and moral values in their children from an early age.
“We must have an honest national conversation about parenting. The values and discipline taught at home play a critical role in shaping the conduct and decisions of our children,” he said.

Mbae noted that addressing challenges facing young people requires a collective effort involving parents, schools, religious institutions, and government agencies. He emphasised that the country must examine both systemic failures and societal issues to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
At least 16 students lost their lives, and over 79 others were injured after a dormitory inferno at Utumishi Girls Academy in Gilgil, Nakuru County, on Friday, May 28, 2026.
