‘Parliament is not a lazy arm of govt’ – Nelson Havi praises National Assembly
Former Law Society of Kenya (LSK) President Nelson Havi has hailed the National Assembly over their effectiveness is handling legislations.
Speaking during an interview with a local TV station on Wednesday, October 30, 2024, Have noted that despite countable shortcomings, Parliament is not a lazy arm of government.
He explained that the National Assembly has demonstrated impressive and effective performance whenever there is need for legislation.
“To a large extent we must admit that Parliament is not a lazy arm of government, when there is a need to pass legislation speedily and effectively, they will do it. Where there is need for parliament to take a policy within a short time they have able to do it,” Have said.
He, however, underscored that the Parliament needs to take consideration of every public participation since it will affect every action that they do.
“We must be very deliberate so far as this public participation is concerned because it will bedevil every activity undertaken by parliament,” he added.
Havi also poked holes in the judiciary noting that the recent ongoing national issues including the implementation of policies may force Kenyans to take action if the courts fail to address the problems.
“Kenyans may need to take action if the courts do not address obvious problems,” he added.
Migori Senator Eddy Oketch who was also present weighed in on Havi’s remarks noting that Kenya was facing challenges because of the actions of the Legilsature, Executive and Judiciary.
According to the senator, the three arms of government lack understanding of the constitutional issue.
“As a country, we face a major challenge because the actions of the Legislature, Executive, and Judiciary reveal a lack of understanding of constitutional issue,” he said.
