FOI WAMBUI is a fashion forward screen and theatre actress, radio presenter, TV host and an art enthusiast. She talks with CHEBET KORIR on her style sense 

Tell us a bit about your fashion journey?

To me, fashion has always been a way of visual self-expression, and something that has consciously or subconsciously influenced how I feel each day. Clothes have a way of putting you and others in a certain frame of mind that is so powerful. So, I’ve learnt to play around with the colours and items in my closet to feel happy, relaxed, confident, sexy or relatable, depending on what I’m doing or who I’m meeting. 

How does your work in the media influence your style?

As a radio host, honestly it doesn’t matter what you wear because no one really cares since they only hear your voice. But on TV, as a visual medium, everything you have on you sends a subliminal message to the audience. So, I have to be careful about what I put on, careful enough not to lose my personal sense of style. I’m just glad that my stylist, Winnie Odande, does a fantastic job at helping me with that.

As an actress, what guides you on your look?

As an actor, you create an entirely new and whole person, so you have to ask yourself what your character would wear even if it’s completely outside your comfort zone. 

What you wear when performing really sets the mood for your performance. Clothes for an actor aren’t just beautiful pieces on their body; they are what help you transform from being Foi to being a University of Nairobi Christian Union leader in 1985. 

What fashion choices come with being a film producer?

I have recently started producing films with a team of talented young artists, and it’s been an interesting journey so far. 

Being a producer has really taught me that clothes actually have a voice of their own. They send a message to the audience watching the film and can break or make the story.

In three words, how can you describe your style and why?

Comfortable, edgy and chic. I like comfort and functional items, so I just mix that up with looking like a powerful glass of fine wine. 

How does your style affect your personality and lifestyle?

My lifestyle is fast-paced, since I have to get several things done each day. But I still have to look in a way to be taken seriously in the rooms that I enter, without moving away from my fun and playful personality. It’s an interesting balance. 

What fashion item can’t you leave the house without?

A scarf. Instead of walking around with big jackets in my bag, a scarf feels like a safe and efficient item.

What do you splurge on the most?

Currently it’s shoes. Previously, I never felt the need to spend lots of money on shoes; I’d sometimes be okay with thrifted shoes. But I’ve been learning about quality over quantity, so I’d rather spend more on shoes that would last me a longer period of time.

What’s your go-to accessory?

Definitely a pair of earrings, especially statement and brass earrings. They take your look from 0 to 100 real quick.

Who is your style icon?

A South African fashion blogger called Mpho Lebajoa. She wears comfortable, edgy and chic outfits and she pulls off extravagant and unique pieces in such an effortless way. She’s petite like me, so she’s taught me a thing or two on how to style my body type.

Who is your favourite Kenyan designer

Definitely it’s KikoRomeo. Their pieces are beautiful and unique and authentically tell the Kenyan story.

What is your best fashion buy this year?

Palazzo pants! I’ve bought so many of them this year.
