NTSA confirms withdrawal of instant fines
The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has withdrawn its earlier notice on the rollout of the Instant Fines Management System.
In a statement on Friday, March 27, 2026, NTSA cited the need for greater public awareness and clarity on procedures governing minor traffic offences before full roll out of the system.
The authority said it had rescinded the announcement made on March 9, 2026, which had signalled the system’s go-live.
“The National Transport and Safety Authority wishes to inform the public of the withdrawal of the public notice announcing the go live of the instant fines issued on 9th March, 2026,” the statement reads.
NTSA explained that the decision was informed by the realization that members of the public require a clearer understanding of how instant fines would be administered, particularly under existing legal provisions.
“This withdrawal has been necessitated by realisation that the public need to understand the details and standard procedure of handling minor traffic offenses as defined in Section 117 of the Traffic Act,” the authority said.
The agency added that it will now undertake further communication to outline the standard procedures aligned with the law in a bid to eliminate confusion.
“The Authority will communicate the standard procedures aligned to the provisions of the existing laws on handling of instant fines and minor traffic offenses to avoid any misinformation and provide clarity on the same,” NTSA noted.
The Instant Fines Management System is designed to streamline enforcement of traffic rules by allowing on-the-spot penalties for minor offences, a move aimed at improving compliance and reducing road accidents.
Despite the setback, NTSA reaffirmed its commitment to road safety and reducing fatalities, emphasizing that proper and fair enforcement of traffic penalties remains central to its mandate.
“NTSA remains committed to ensuring safety on our roads and reducing fatalities. Consistent, predictable, fair and certain administration of penalties on traffic infractions remains a core component of reducing the burden of deaths on our roads,” the statement added.
The authority did not indicate when the system would be relaunched, but signalled that further guidance will be issued once the public sensitization process is complete.
