Narok, Nairobi, Kiambu top revenue collection

Narok, Nairobi, and Kiambu counties have been ranked in that order as the top three regional governments in their source revenue (OSR) collection.

The report by Controller of Budget Margaret Nyakang’o which captures the first quarter of the 2024/2025 financial year indicates that all counties collected Sh12.68 billion, a 24 per cent increase compared to a similar period in the previous year, when Sh10.2 billion was realised.

The report examines budget implementation by all 47 county governments.

Narok County, which is headed by Governor Patrick Ole Ntutu, collected Sh2.98 billion.

Approximately 97 per cent of its total revenue came from increased fees charged at the Maasai Mara Game Park, a tourist site with international attractions.

“The highest revenue stream, Sh2.89 billion, was from Masai Mara Game Park Fees after the Narok County Assembly increased fees from 80 dollars (Sh10,320) to 200 dollars (Sh25,600), contributing to 97 per cent of the total OSR receipts during the reporting period,” reads the report.

Nairobi, collected Sh2.18 billion, with building plans contributing Sh484 million, parking fees Sh434 million, health services Sh382 million, business permits Sh275 million, and land rates Sh196 million. Some  Sh414 million was raised from “other sources.” Kiambu County collected approximately Sh833 million, with Sh345 million collected from health services, technical services Sh176 million, property income Sh106 million, parking Sh76 million, and Sh119 million from “other sources.”

On the flip side, the ten counties that collected the lowest revenue were West Pokot, which took the last position, collecting Sh32 million; Marsabit, which collected Sh33 million, Lamu managed Sh 34 million, Mandera got Sh 42 million, Wajir collected Sh46 million and Vihiga Sh 52 million.
