Former KNUT Secretary General Wilson Sossion has weighed in on the mounting political storm facing Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja, insisting that the push to impeach him is not merely a scheme by Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) but a direct demand from Nairobi residents.

Sossion, while speaking during a political talk show aired by a local television station on Thursday, September 4, 2025, said the people of the capital are the driving force behind the pressure, citing what he termed as serious accusations that cannot be ignored.

“It is not the MCAs impeaching Sakaja; it is the people of Nairobi, because he has been accused of serious allegations, including gross violation of the law and embezzlement of public funds,” Sossion declared.

MCAs acting after other avenues failed

He explained that the impeachment motion currently being fronted by MCAs is a reflection of failed efforts to resolve issues through other channels. According to Sossion, the assembly only moved to that step after exhausting all alternative measures to address the leadership crisis at City Hall.

“If MCAs have resorted to impeachment, it is because other avenues for resolving leadership problems have failed,” he noted.

This comes amid growing divisions in Nairobi politics, where MCAs have accused Sakaja of high-handedness, mismanagement, and corruption. The impeachment threat, insiders suggest, has sparked a wider national conversation, drawing in both government and opposition leadership.

Ruto, Raila’s stance

Sossion pointed out that both President William Ruto and opposition leader Raila Odinga have not opposed the charges against Sakaja, choosing instead to explore dialogue as a way to calm the storm.

“Ruto and Raila have not opposed the charges but have instead decided to pursue dialogue to resolve the issues,” he said.

His remarks sharpen the spotlight on Sakaja, who has come under increasing scrutiny from different quarters, including civil society and county leaders. While the Governor has previously dismissed some of the accusations, the growing wave of political voices calling for accountability suggests his position could be in jeopardy.

As the impeachment motion gathers momentum, all eyes are now on Nairobi’s County Assembly and how the national leadership balances political survival with demands for accountability from the people of Nairobi.
