Former Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza and her husband, Murega Baichu, were among hundreds of leaders and farmers who graced the 10th Annual Dairy Farmers Field Day held at the Meru ASK Showground on Saturday, June 21, 2025.

President William Ruto and his Deputy Kithure Kindiki presided over the event, which brought together high-profile leaders, especially from the Kenya Kwanza side.

However, according to Mwangaza, she was an unwelcome guest.

Through her statement shared on Saturday night, June 21, 2025, Mwangaza claimed that a plan had been hatched to block her from attending the event.

The former Meru governor, who was impeached several times, narrated that approaching the event’s venue, she noticed a section of police officers blocking her motorcade.

How she dodged

Aware of the plan, Mwangaza decided to enter the venue on foot, and she was met by a handful of her supporters.

According to Mwangaza, a security officer then approached her and told her that they had received firm instructions not to allow her to attend the event.

With the help of her supporters, Mwangaza went to attend the event despite the police’s statement.

“They blocked our vehicle on the way into Meru Dairy Farmers field day, at the gate of Meru ASK GITOORO GROUNDS. After which I alighted from the vehicle and walked in by foot. Before the police officers realised, I was already 20 metres past the main entrance,” Mwangaza’s statement read in part.

“OCs and some GSU officers caught up with us and said they have instructions not to allow me inside,” she added.

“As a farmer and a member of the Meru Dairy farmers, I exercised my constitutional rights and walked together with fellow farmers to the event.”

In the event, the former Governor’s presence was acknowledged by North Imenti Member of Parliament (MP) Rahim Dawood as he invited Meru lawmakers to address the gathering.

“May all the MPs come on board. I want to recognise the former Governor, Kawira—please stand,” Dawood said amid cheers from the crowd. “The former First Gentleman, please also stand,” he added.

Ruto’s address

In his address, President Ruto made several promises and also addressed the current political heat in the country.

He slammed his former Deputy Rigathi Gachagua while praising Kithure Kindiki as an able assistant.

During his roadside rally, Ruto vowed to elevate Meru to city status.

“The governor has said he wants Meru to become Kenya’s next city. Do you want Meru to become the next city? So, do you think I did not know that? I already had that idea in mind,” Ruto said.
