‘Let’s not glorify revenge politics’ – Mutunga urges support for Uhuru in demand for retirement benefits
By Collins Amanga, June 14, 2024
Former Chief Justice Willy Mutunga has voiced support for retired President Uhuru Kenyatta’s demand for his retirement benefits, insisting on the importance of upholding constitutional rights.
This follows revelations that Kenyatta’s office received a fraction of the allocated funds for the 2022/2023 financial year, sparking public debate.
Uhuru’s briefing
During a recent press briefing by Kanze Dena, spokesperson for the Office of the Retired President, it was disclosed that Kenyatta’s office received only a fraction of the budget allocated, prompting discussions on the adequacy of retirement benefits.
Dena refuted claims made by government spokesperson Isaac Mwaura regarding a lump-sum gratuity payment to the former president.
In response to a cartoon by Kiddo Gammz highlighting the contrast between Kenyatta’s past statements on media and his recent engagement with the press, Mutunga emphasized the need to support Kenyatta in his pursuit of justice and constitutional entitlements, cautioning against revenge politics.
“We must stand with him on his demand for his rights and justice because the Constitution says so. Let’s not glorify revenge politics and actions against anyone,” Mutunga said on X.
Uhuru meeting Ruto
The conversation surrounding retirement benefits escalated and led to a meeting between President William Ruto and his predecessor, during which they discussed Kenyatta’s concerns.
State House Spokesperson Hussein Mohamed confirmed the meeting and announced the formation of a team, led by Head of Public Service Felix Koskei, to address the issues raised by Dena.
