Migori senator Eddy Oketch has chided President William Ruto over his reaction to victims of police brutality witnessed during the opposition’s anti-government protests.

Speaking during an interview with Citizen TV on Monday, July 31, 2023, Oketch claimed that the President was being ‘insensitive to those who lost their lives by praising police for maintaining law and order during the protests.

Oketch also lamented that it was unjust for the country’s Head of State not to do a follow-up of those who lost their lives or got injured during the demonstrations.

“I must say this with a lot of humility is very disappointing to see someone who would want to be respected as president of this country talk like that on a public forum ann TV because he is being very insensitive to the people who have lost their lives,” he stated.

“And in any case, the bearer of the biggest weight to be able to get the details of the people who have died. The president cannot continue as if life is normal and then goes and praises the police and then does not even say a simple sorry to people who have lost life in this country,” he added.

Oketch, while accusing the President of not acknowledging the pain of families who lost their loved ones also claimed that it was unfair for the President to solely blame the opposition.

The Senator further asserted that the President should apologize to Kenyans and the families of those affected during the protests.

“That public apology should come from the president, because of the loss of lives that we have seen in this country, the brute force that we have seen, in fact to some extent profiling a community. We have seen it because of people who hold autonomy and monopoly of the police force,” he stated.

“You have seen the president go around the country, not at any single time has he ever recognised the pain of mothers who are crying for their sons, some are young as 17 years old who have been shot in the streets,” he added.
