Michael Olunga, Okumu on target abroad
Michael Olunga still sits pretty at the top of scorers’ chart in the J1 League after scoring the solitary goal for Kashiwa Reysol in a 3-1 loss in their weekend clash against Cerezo Osaka.
The loss means Kashiwa Reysol drops to seventh on the log with 16 points but the Kenyan talisman remains top scorer in the Championship with 12 goals to his name.
Olunga is attracting interest in Europe given his exploits in the Land of the Rising Sun with Turkish giants Besiktas and Leicester city in the English Premiership reportedly monitoring him.
Elsewhere in South Africa, Anthony Okumu of Kaizer Chiefs scored a goal in their 3-2 win over Polokwane City at the weekend. It was a comeback from two goals down in the Saturday afternoon fixture played at Loftus Versfeld Stadium.
Amakhosi now lead the standings in the Premier Soccer League with 52 points off 24 matches as they seek a direct stab at next season’s Continental Champions League.
Okumu, also known as Vieira, by his peers counted this as his first start of the season for the Johannesburg based side.
Meanwhile, former Harambee Stars custodian Arnold Origi was red carded in the 89th minute o as his HIFK side went down 3-2 to Inter Tuku at the weekend in the Finnish top flight.
HIFK is fifth on the log of the 12-team Veikkausliiga table with 16 points off nine matches. Fellow countryman Sydney Lokale played no part in the match.
In the Belgium top flight, Kenyan international Johanna Omolo clocked 90 minutes in Cercle Brugge’s comeback 2-1 win over Royal Antwerp. Cercle Brugge is now ninth on the log with three points after two rounds in the 2020-21 campaign.
The 31-year-old defensive midfielder has been a mainstay of the club for the past three seasons and has been instrumental especially in the last campaign.
In Sweden, Joseph Okumu played the full match as well at the weekend as his IF Elfsborg side drew 2-2 away at Hammarby.
The centre back was instrumental in the fixture played at Stockholm’s Tele2 Arena.
IF Elfsborg is second in the standings with 31 points in this campaign after what has been a strong start having won all the past three matches on the trot.
