Man armed with arrows spears police officer to death at State House gate

A police officer was killed on Monday morning, October 13, 2025, after being speared by an attacker near State House, Nairobi.

The National Police Service said the incident happened at about 8:10 am along Dennis Pritt Road, close to State House Gate D. According to the police, a 56-year-old man approached officers guarding the area while armed with a bow and arrows.

When the officers ordered him to stop and surrender, he advanced toward Police Constable Ramadhan Mattanka and shot him in the left ribs. Officers from the General Service Unit (GSU) who were stationed nearby quickly intervened and arrested the man.

Constable Mattanka was rushed to Kenyatta National Hospital for treatment, but died while receiving medical care. His body was later moved to the hospital’s mortuary for a post-mortem examination.

Police condemn brutal attack

In a statement, the National Police Service condemned the killing, calling it a brutal and unprovoked act. The Service praised the officers on duty for responding fast and preventing more harm.

“The National Police Service condemns this heinous act and commends the officers for their swift response, which prevented further harm. An investigation is ongoing to establish the motive behind the attack,” read part of the statement.

“We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the late Constable Ramadhan Mattanka, who paid the ultimate price in the line of duty. The officer’s next of kin have been notified, and the Service stands in solidarity with them during this difficult time.”
