Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) Deputy Party Leader Cleophas Malala has given an update on the party’s preparations should the flight carrying former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua be diverted to either Kisumu or Mombasa, as widely speculated.

Addressing the press at the DCP headquarters on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, Malala revealed that thousands of Kenyans are expected to gather at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) on Thursday, August 21, 2025, to receive Gachagua, who has been away on a month-long tour.

He emphasised that in the event of a diversion to Kisumu or Mombasa, the party has already put in place arrangements with supporters stationed in both regions to welcome him back to the country.

Malala further explained that logistical measures have been secured to ensure Gachagua is flown back to Nairobi should such a scheme materialise.

“In the event that his plane gets diverted to either Kisumu or Mombasa, he will still be received by our supporters in those respective cities, and we have made adequate plans and alternative logistics to that effect,” Malala stated.

Malala has also confirmed that Gachagua will touch down at noon at JKIA and will be received by thousands of his supporters, and that from there on, they will have a peaceful procession from the airport to the CBD, with the DCP leader addressing Kenyans at various stopovers

This being the final update on Gachagua’s return by the DCP, Malala said that his supporters are required to start arriving at the airport as early as 8:00 am

Plea to IPOA

He went on to call upon the independent policing oversight authority to be vigilant, in case the security officers mishandle the procession, urging them not to stay silent, as according to Malala, they have failed to take action against police excesses meted out upon the opposition leaders.

“To the IPOA, as you are aware, the opposition has been a victim of police brutality with no action from your end.” Malala states

His remarks come in the wake of statements by Deputy President Kithure Kindiki and Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen suggesting that Gachagua should be arrested upon arrival at JKIA.
