The country is staring at a serious food crisis following the infiltration of fake seeds into the market.
Agricultural experts say the seeds are being sold to unsuspecting farmers, adding that there is need for urgent intervention.

Kenya Seed Company (KSC) and Seed Trade Association of Kenya have since called on farmers to be vigilant and wary of the quality of seeds they buy, warning that counterfeit seeds have led to low crop production and reduced yields.

The association chairman Wellington Wasike decried the continued counterfeiting of their seed products, leading to farmers acquiring fake seeds and ending up with poor or no harvests.

“As an association, we are asking the government to scale up the war on fake seeds even as we encourage farmers to buy seeds at established agrovets to avoid being conned,” said Wasike.

KCS director Sammy Kiplagat said new technologies are being embraced to counter fake seeds by ensuring certified and original seeds have certified stickers.

They were speaking yesterday on the sidelines of the ongoing Africa Seed Trade Association Congress 2024 in Mombasa.
