‘Serikali na KRA ni wavivu wa kutafuta ushuru’ – Likuyani MP tells off gov’t over increased taxation
Likuyani Member of Parliament (MP) Innocent Mugabe has criticised the Kenya Kwanza administration and the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) over the country’s taxation policies.
Addressing a crowd on Saturday, June 15, 2024, the lawmaker stated that the government and the taxman had failed to explore other avenues of tax collection because they were lazy.
He went on to state that the country has several untapped areas that can generate revenue without overburdening citizens already struggling to survive lean times.
Mugabe advised that the government should look into rental tax since several landlords in the country make a fortune without paying taxes.
“Si ati Kenya haina pesa, Kenya iko na pesa but serikali na KRA ni wavivu wa kutafuta ushuru. They are lazy ndio maana wanataka kutafuta mbinu raisi raisi ya kuleta pesa, wanajua ukikata insurance lazima kuna tax.
“We have thousands of landlords in this country ambao hawalipi tax ya rental. KRA should focus their energies, waende kule kwa malandlord ambao hawalipi rental tax watafute hio pesa wawachane na wananchi wa kawaida,” he stated.
The MP additionally pointed out that the President William Ruto-led administration should also find ways to tame corrupt entities stealing billions of taxpayers’ money to save money for important projects and subsequently relieve citizens of the burden of taxation.
“Badala ya kuwaambia watu watoe pesa zaidi tungeweka pesa isaidie kufunga ufujaji wa pesa, we will save a lot of money. If we can seal those corruption loop holes then we will save a lot of money na wananchi tutawaondolea mzigo wa kuwaovertax,” he added.
