Keiyo South Member of Parliament (MP) Gideon Kimaiyo has reaffirmed his commitment to supporting higher education in his constituency by pledging full university sponsorship for day school students who score C+ and above in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations.

In a post on X dated January 15, 2026, Kimaiyo reiterated that any student from day schools in the constituency who attains a grade of C+ and above and qualifies for university will be fully sponsored until completion, noting that this initiative is part of a promise he made during his first term and remains committed to delivering.

“I also committed that any student from day schools across the constituency who attains a grade of C+ and above, qualifying for university, will be fully sponsored until completion. This is part of the promise I made in my first term, and I remain committed to delivering on it.”

Free all-day secondary education

The pledge builds on Kimaiyo’s existing initiative to provide free all-day secondary education in Keiyo South. Highlighting the programme’s success, he said on January 13, 2026: “In Keiyo South Constituency, all-day secondary school education is completely free, absolutely free. Students also receive lunch (no chapati yet). But yes, it is possible, and we are proud that this is happening.”

By removing financial barriers at the secondary level, the programme ensures students can focus on their studies and prepares them for higher education. Extending support to university-level education provides a seamless path for motivated students, particularly those from modest backgrounds.

Supporting academic excellence

Kimaiyo’s sponsorship targets students who meet the minimum university entry grade of C+, addressing a critical gap where many qualified students drop out or defer studies due to fees.

Kimaiyo’s efforts underscore his belief in education as a transformative tool and reinforce the message that promises made are promises kept, offering hope and opportunities for students in Keiyo South to pursue higher education without financial barriers.

He has previously supported bright but needy students, including those rescued from early marriage or enrolled in college programmes such as KMTC. Additional support, like free lunches during national exams, ensures students can concentrate on their studies without hunger distractions.

This comes as the nation received its 2025 KCSE results with students, where President William Ruto expressed satisfaction over the performance.

“We are impressed that out of the 993,000 candidates, 50 per cent of whom were girls, 270,000 attained C+ and above, securing a direct entry to university,” President Ruto stated in a post on X dated January 9, 2026.

The results, officially released by Education CS Julius Migos Ogamba at AIC Chebisaas High School in Eldoret, marked a notable milestone in university qualifiers under the concluding phase of the 8-4-4 system.
