CS Ogamba rules out academic calendar change amid school unrest
The Ministry of Education has confirmed that the Term Two mid-term break for schools across the country will proceed as scheduled, ending speculation over possible changes to the academic calendar.
Speaking on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, Education Cabinet Secretary Migos Ogamba announced that the mid-term break will run from June 24 to June 28, 2026, maintaining the official school calendar without adjustments.
“The mid-term break for the Second Term of the 2026 School Year will take place as scheduled, from 24th June, 2026 to 28th June, 2026,” Ogamba said.

He urged the parents to use the break to spend with their children in providing guidance and support for them throughout the period.
“Parents and guardians are urged to use the break to spend time with their children and to provide guidance and support to them. Any grievances or concerns should be articulated appropriately and shared with schools and other relevant authorities for action,” Ogamba said.
Instructions to the schools
The Ministry instructed schools to urgently engage parents in decision-making on learner welfare.
“Schools shall urgently convene consultative Parents Association meetings to review the state of affairs and learner welfare in their respective schools.”
The Ministry further emphasized the need for strengthened safety systems in learning institutions, citing rising concerns over learner wellbeing.

“Schools shall strengthen safety measures and address any concerns and grievances that learners may have raised. Schools shall also intensify guidance and counselling programmes and strengthen learner-grievance handling mechanisms.”
County and Sub-County Education Offices have also been directed to step up oversight through targeted inspections and risk assessments.
“County and Sub-County Education Offices shall undertake targeted safety assessments and audits and monitor institutions considered to be at risk.”
