The United Nations Organisation Stabilisation Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO) has stepped up its engagement in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo by extending the deployment of the Kenyan 5th Quick Reaction Force (KENQRF 5) to the new Eringeti-Mayimoya-Kainama axis.

In a statement on their X handle on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) have stated that the deployment comes as part of the United Nations mandate to protect civilians in the volatile North Kivu.

“In a move to fulfil the United Nations’ civilian protection mandate, Kenya’s 5th Quick Reaction Force (KENQRF 5), operating under the United Nations Organisation Stabilisation Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO), has expanded its area of operations into the volatile Eringeti-Mayimoya-Kainama axis. The deployment follows the successful restoration of stability in the Mbau, Oicha, Mantumbi and Mamove areas, marking a significant deepening of the mission’s footprint in North Kivu,” KDF noted in a statement.

The deployment comes after the successful re-establishment of relative security in areas such as Mbau, Oicha, Mantumbi and Mamove, which have been plagued by insecurity resulting from armed group presence.

According to KDF, the move into the new axis is intended to build on the success of securing the former areas of operation and to protect more vulnerable populations. The Eringeti-Mayimoya-Kainama axis has been pinpointed as a flashpoint, often prone to insurgencies and attacks on civilians.

KENQRF 5, renowned for its quick reaction and mobility, has played a significant role in MONUSCO’s peacebuilding strategy. Its tasks range from deterrent patrols and protection of strategic supply lines to coordinating with other UN forces to prevent a return to violence.

Kenya’s effort in peacekeeping

The boost also highlights Kenya’s ongoing support for UN peacekeeping missions. Kenyan soldiers have been recognised for their competence and bravery in dangerous situations, such as in eastern Congo, where humanitarian conditions are precarious.

With the deployment of KENQRF 5 towards the Eringeti-Mayimoya-Kainama corridor, MONUSCO seeks to further threaten the presence of armed groups and increase government control in one of the most unstable areas of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
