PLP party leader Martha Karua has dismissed claims that the united opposition has settled on a single presidential candidate to face William Ruto in the 2027 General Election, insisting that no agreement has been reached on either the candidate or the selection process.

Speaking on Sunday, July 5, 2026, during Family Day celebrations at St. James Catholic Church in Difathas, Mwea, Kirinyaga County, Karua said opposition leaders are yet to agree on the rules and method that will be used to identify one presidential candidate.

Without naming anyone directly, Karua cautioned some opposition leaders against making unilateral declarations that could undermine the coalition’s unity.

“We have not agreed on the criteria or the process of selecting our presidential candidate. Anyone speaking as though a decision has already been made is misleading Kenyans,” Karua said.

Public announcement to be made

She emphasized that once consensus is reached, the opposition will publicly announce its candidate and rally behind that individual.

“When the time comes, and we have completed consultations, we shall present one candidate to Kenyans, and every leader will stand behind that choice,” she added.

Karua also condemned the rising cases of alleged abductions across the country, accusing the government of failing to protect citizens and leaving many families in anguish.

“Too many families are living in fear and uncertainty as they search for their loved ones. Every Kenyan has a right to life, liberty, and security,” Karua said.

Meanwhile, former Kirinyaga woman representative Wangui Ngirici criticized the Kenya Kwanza administration over the deaths of young Kenyans, urging voters to hold the government accountable in the next election.

“A government that cannot protect the lives of its young people has failed in its most basic duty. Kenyans must use the ballot to demand accountability,” Wangui stated.
