People’s Liberation Party (PLP) leader Martha Karua has appeared to curse the soul of former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chairperson Wafula Chebukati, saying it should be troubled wherever it is.

Speaking during an interview with political analyst Herman Manyora on his YouTube podcast aired on Friday, July 3, 2026, the outspoken PLP leader defended her remarks, arguing that it is not within human capacity to determine whether Chebukati’s soul should rest in peace or be troubled.

“May the soul of Chebukati be troubled,” she said.

Karua went on to blame the late Chebukati for Azimio’s loss in the 2022 presidential election, claiming that he presided over an unfair electoral process that favoured President William Ruto.

According to Karua, Raila Odinga won in 27 counties while Ruto won in only 20, arguing that the county-by-county results did not support the final presidential outcome announced by the IEBC.

She noted that among the larger counties, Ruto only carried Kiambu and Meru, while Raila won other populous counties, including Nairobi, Nakuru, Mombasa, Kakamega, Kisumu, and Narok. Based on that, she argued that it was difficult to reconcile how a candidate who won 20 counties could defeat one who carried 27 counties, describing it as “Chebukati’s mathematics.”

“Raila won in 27 counties, while Ruto won in 20. If you check, Ruto only won two of the bigger counties—Kiambu and Meru. Raila won the rest, including Nairobi, Nakuru, Mombasa, Kakamega, Kisumu, and Narok, which are among the biggest counties. If you count those, you will realise there is no way a person who won in 20 counties could defeat someone who won in 27. That was Chebukati’s mathematics.”

Karua further questioned the length of time taken to declare the presidential results, arguing that vote counting is conducted at the polling station by election officials and is completed within a few hours after voting ends.

She maintained that an honest aggregation of results should not take longer than the night of the election, insisting that by midnight, the counting process should be largely complete. She criticised the practice of taking several days to announce presidential results, saying Kenyans should reject prolonged tallying periods.

2022 stalemate

Her remarks revive the long-running dispute over the outcome of the 2022 General Election, in which Azimio leaders have consistently maintained that the presidential results did not reflect the will of the voters, while the IEBC declared William Ruto the winner and the result was subsequently upheld by the Supreme Court.
