Immediate former St. Paul’s University VC James Kombo dies
The immediate former St Paul’s University vice-chancellor, Rev. Canon Prof. James Kombo, is dead.
In a brief but solemn statement shared via X on the night of Monday, April 28, 2026, the university expressed deep sorrow at the passing of the distinguished scholar and clergy leader while extending condolences to his family and loved ones.
“It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Rev. Canon Prof. James Kombo, immediate former Vice-Chancellor St. Paul’s University-Kenya. We pray for his family, friends, and relatives during this difficult moment. May his soul rest in eternal peace,” the institution stated.

However, the institution did not immediately reveal the cause of Prof. Kombo’s death, which came just two months after he left his tenure.
Prof. Kombo’s legacy
On Wednesday, February 25, 2026, the university bid farewell to Kombo at an event that was held at the Student Amphitheatre, Limuru Campus.
Prof. Kombo was widely respected for his contribution to higher education in Kenya, particularly through his leadership at St. Paul’s University, one of the country’s leading private universities with strong roots in Christian theology and ethical leadership.
During his tenure as vice-chancellor, he is credited with strengthening the university’s academic programmes, expanding its institutional reach, and reinforcing its mission of producing graduates grounded in integrity, scholarship, and service.
“Prof. Kombo’s “5-year reign” as Vice Chancellor has been defined by a deep integration of academic rigor and spiritual foundation. Under his guidance, St. Paul’s University has strengthened its position as a leading private institution in the region, fostering an environment where students don’t just earn degrees, but build character,” a notice published by St Paul’s University announcing Prof. Kombo’s farewell ceremony reads in part.
“Whether it was navigating the complexities of modern higher education or engaging with students in the amphitheatre, his presence has been a cornerstone of the Limuru campus experience.”
Beyond academia, Prof. Kombo was also a prominent figure within the Anglican Church, where he served as a reverend canon and played a key role in theological scholarship and the mentorship of clergy.
The university has not yet released details regarding funeral and memorial arrangements, indicating that further communication will be issued in due course.
As the country mourns a respected scholar and man of the cloth, many have joined St Paul’s University in praying for strength and comfort for his family during this difficult time.
