Nairobi County has again recorded the highest number of newly registered voters as the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise hits the second week, according to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

In a press release issued on Friday, October 10, 2025, the commission stated that Nairobi County topped the list for the second consecutive week with 4,804 new registrants, followed by Mombasa with 1,379.

” The commission appreciates the many Kenyans who have registered, updated their details or transferred their data records,” the statement reads.

Low turnout

The commission went ahead to remind Kenyans that the exercise is important for a free and fair election. “Your Participation is Vital in strengthening free, fair and credible elections,” the statement reads.

The commission further noted that turnout among young people, the main target group of the ongoing registration, has been disappointingly low. It urged eligible youths to take advantage of the exercise and register as voters, emphasising that doing so would empower them to actively participate in shaping the country’s leadership and determining their future through the ballot.

“While we commend this progress, turnout among the targeted youths remains lower than expected, with a national target of 6.3 million new voters, the commission urges all the eligible Kenyans, particularly the youths, to take this opportunity to register and make their choices count in the 2027General election,” the statement reads

The IEBC had earlier announced the introduction of enhanced biometric registration, adding iris recognition to the existing methods, which include fingerprints and facial recognition. The Commission described iris recognition as “the most robust and fraud-resistant recognition method.

Chairperson Erastus Edung Ethekon urged all eligible Kenyans, particularly youth and first-time voters, to take advantage of the registration window.
