Ichung’wah: Why Gachagua is not using military aircraft
National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichungw’ah has set the record straight on why Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua is not using military aircraft.
Addressing the issue on Wednesday, May 12, 2024, Ichung’wah referred to Defence Cabinet Secretary (CS) Aden Duale’s remarks stating that the military choppers were only accessible to the president and First Lady, he added that Gachagua was assigned a police aircraft operated by personnel from the Kenya Air Force.
The Kikuyu Member of Parliament (MP) went on to state that the DP’s designated aircraft is currently undergoing maintenance, adding that the maintenance will be completed in a few weeks and the aircraft will be ready for use.
He, however, indicated that Defence Cabinet Secretary (CS) Aden Duale will be appearing before the National Assembly to answer questions and clarify the use of military aircraft among high-profile government officials.
“I did engage the Cabinet Secretary for Defence and indeed I have asked honorable speaker so that we put this matter to rest, I will be writing to the Defence CS to answer questions pertaining to the use of military aircraft in this country because he did assert the other day that only the President as commander in chief, since we don’t have a deputy commander in chief and the First Lady have access to military aircraft.
“The deputy has a police aircraft designated for his use which is currently under maintenance because it is not just an aircraft maintained by the government but whenever the DP is flying the aircraft, for his safety and security bearing in mind the office he holds, he is usually flown and operated by Kenya Airforce pilots and servicemen,” he said.
Adding;
“The Defence Cabinet Secretary (Aden Duale) did inform me that for the last year, the aircraft used by the Deputy President, prime cabinet secretary and other senior government officials occasioned an expenditure of Ksh500 million to KDF.”
On Sunday, DP Gachagua arrived late at the Akurinu National Prayer Conference in Nakuru, he explained to the attendees that he was late because of transport difficulties.
“I delayed to leave and I was stuck between Longonot and Naivasha for almost two hours before I could get here,” Gachagua said.
