Govt screens over 100K travellers in push to block Ebola as regional cases top 700
Kenya has screened more than 100,000 international travellers at airports and border points as part of its drive to keep the country free of Ebola.
Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale shared this update during a high-level virtual meeting on Saturday, June 13, 2026, with EU, Africa CDC and WHO leaders.
The regional outbreak continues to grow. As of mid-June 2026, the Democratic Republic of Congo reported around 689 confirmed cases and 139 deaths. Uganda added 19 confirmed cases and 2 deaths. The total now stands near 708 cases and 141 deaths. Health workers make up a worrying share of those infected.
Kenya has recorded zero cases. All suspected alerts investigated so far have tested negative. Duale used the meeting to highlight the scale of Kenya’s border work. Officials check travellers for symptoms and exposure risks at every major entry point. This large number of screenings shows how seriously Kenya takes the threat from busy cross-border movement in affected areas.
Full picture of Kenya’s readiness
- Screened over 100,000 international travellers.
- Designated four national laboratories for fast Ebola testing.
- Keeps 343 rapid response personnel ready to deploy.
- Trained more than 2,000 healthcare workers.
- Runs simulation drills in high-risk counties.
- Set up isolation and treatment facilities on standby.
These steps go beyond routine checks. Kenya stepped up operations once the Bundibugyo strain appeared next door in May 2026. The focus on traveller screening forms the first strong line of defence at 26 official points of entry.

Call for coordinated Ebola response
Global leaders at the meeting, including WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus and Africa CDC Director-General Dr Jean Kaseya, called for more vaccines, diagnostics, protective equipment and joint surveillance.
Kenya backs the Continental Preparedness and Response Plan and wants reliable funding that does not cut everyday health services. Kenya’s Director-General for Health Patrick Amoth also joined the talks.
Kenya listed in Israel Ebola entry restriction review list
Kenya has also been mentioned in Israel’s expanded Ebola preparedness measures, where authorities are considering a temporary entry restriction for non-citizens and non-residents who have recently stayed in Ebola-affected countries.
According to the Epidemiology Division, the proposed list includes the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda, South Sudan, Rwanda and Kenya. Officials said the step is based on the spread of infections in the region and the movement of at-risk populations across borders.
They added that the aim is to reduce the risk of importing Ebola cases while maintaining essential travel and ensuring hospitals remain fully prepared.
