Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Sharrif Nassir has led a delegation of leaders from the coastal counties to Bondo for the burial of the late Beryl Odinga, the sister of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

In a statement shared on social media on Saturday, December 6, 2025, the governor noted that the leaders had packed their bags and were en route to Bondo to stand in solidarity with Oburu Odinga, the ODM party leader, as the Odinga family lays their kin to rest.

Beryl Odinga passed away only weeks after the death of her brother, Raila Odinga.

“En route to Bondo in solidarity with our party leader, Dr Oburu Odinga, for the funeral of his departed sister, the late Beryl Odinga,” Nassir stated.

A united opposition team led by former Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka and DAP-K leader Eugene Wamalwa, who earlier attended a requiem mass at Consolata Shrine in Nairobi, is also expected to travel to the lakeside region to join the Odinga family in bidding farewell to their loved one, who died after a long illness.

During the requiem mass, Beryl Odinga was celebrated as a dedicated and unifying public servant who left an indelible mark in public service.

Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja praised her contributions at the Nairobi Water Service Board, noting that his decision to retain her as a board member in 2022 despite not being politically aligned with Raila at the time proved her professionalism and integrity.

Mourning Beryl

Sakaja narrated that after appointing Beryl to the board, the late Raila Odinga took the earliest flight to Mombasa to confront him but eventually understood the decision once it was explained. He vowed to reserve Beryl’s seat on the water board for one of her daughters to continue her legacy.

Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna used the moment to reflect on the immense sorrow the Odinga family has endured, losing two close relatives in quick succession. He likened their experience to the biblical story of Job, who faced profound trials but ultimately triumphed.

Her sister, Kisumu Woman Rep Ruth Odinga, mourned Beryl as a strong pillar of the Odinga family, describing her as Raila’s closest friend. She spoke emotionally about the difficulty of breaking the news of Raila’s passing to Beryl.

Beryl Odinga’s body arrived at Kang’o ka Jaramogi on Friday, December 5, 2025, ahead of her burial today at the family mausoleum.
