Former Meru Governor Kiraitu Murungi announces retirement from active politics
Former Meru Governor Kiraitu Murungi has announced his retirement from active politics, saying he intends to focus on spreading happiness, particularly in the workplace.
Speaking on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, after receiving an honorary doctorate from Laikipia University in recognition of his distinguished public service and leadership, Kiraitu reflected on his over three decades in public office.
“I’ve retired from electoral politics, and this has broadened my mind,” he said.
Kiraitu recounted the emotional toll of losing the 2022 gubernatorial election, describing a period he likened to post-election depression.
“I was very, very unhappy when I lost the elections. I thought I would win. Every politician thinks they are going to win. And then you have no plan B. You are totally lost,” he stated.
His new focus on happiness stems from a nine-month course at the Happiness Studies Academy, which he credits with giving him a fresh perspective on life.
“I came across the Happiness Studies Academy during that period, and I took a nine-month course to study and understand happiness. And I came to discover I had no reason to be unhappy,” he added.
Kiraitu also said he would practice what he calls low-volume politics.
“Now I’m in low-temperature politics, and I find this intriguing and interesting. Even if you don’t see me now singing on top of trucks and all that. I’m still thinking about democracy,” he explained.
His wife, Priscillah Murungi, welcomed the announcement, saying it was time for him to settle and focus on other issues.
Kiraitu’s political career began in 1992. He has served as MP and cabinet minister during President Mwai Kibaki’s regime, Meru Senator in 2013, and Meru Governor from 2017 until his defeat in 2022 by Kawira Mwangaza.
