As the clock strikes on Sunday, August 3, 2025, Kenya is buzzing with excitement.

The Harambee Stars are poised to kick off their CHAN 2024 campaign against DR Congo at the Moi International Sports Centre in Kasarani, marking a historic moment for the nation.

Co-hosting the tournament alongside Tanzania and Uganda—a decision cemented on December 17, 2023, as part of preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations—Kenya is united in its support for the home team.

From bustling cities to remote villages, Kenyans are rallying behind the Stars, with political leaders, celebrities, and ordinary citizens raising their voices in a wave of optimism and national pride.

Passaris injects energy, pride

Nairobi County Woman Representative Esther Passaris has added her voice to the growing support, offering both encouragement and a uniquely Kenyan flavour to her message. Taking to X, she posted, “Naskia Prezzo amecheza kama yeye. Sasa ni kazi kwenyu @Harambee__Stars. Tuko nyuma yenu. Mnatosha! Nawaaminia mbayaaa. Msiwachilie hio bandal. All the best, Team Kenya.”

Her mention of Prezzo, the well-known Kenyan rapper whose surprise inclusion in the national squad has made headlines, brought a cultural twist to the football conversation. The CHAN tournament, which only features players from local leagues, gives Kenya a platform to showcase its domestic talent—and Prezzo’s presence has only amplified the buzz.

Passaris also extended warm hospitality to Kenya’s opponents in the group stage—DR Congo, Morocco, and Angola—writing, “To DRC, Morocco & Angola, as the Woman Rep of Nairobi County, I welcome you to the city under the sun! Karibuni Sana.” Her remarks reinforced the spirit of African unity that the tournament embodies.

Govt leaders echo support

State House Spokesperson Hussein Mohammed described the day as historic and urged players to step onto the pitch with confidence and national pride. “From every village to every city, the nation stands firmly behind you… Kenya believes in you,” he wrote.

Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale praised the team’s preparation and the country’s collective support. “In moments like these, sport reminds us of the power of national unity and emotional wellness. I applaud our players, coaches, medics, and the entire technical bench,” he said.

High stakes, high hopes

Today’s fixture carries added tension, following DR Congo’s brief disqualification over eligibility issues during the qualifiers—later overturned on appeal. As fans fill Kasarani and millions more tune in, the Harambee Stars carry the weight of a hopeful nation looking to make a strong start on home turf.
