President William Ruto has placed a lucrative bonus of Ksh600 million for Harambee Stars if the team makes history by lifting the 8th edition of the 2024 African Nations Championship games.

Speaking after meeting the team this Saturday, August 2, 2025, Ruto announced the lucrative package as part of Kenya’s support and motivation for the players as they embark on the continental campaign on home soil.

Prize money

“I have revised the Ksh200 M reward for reaching the finals that Salim Mvurya had placed with you. If you reach the final, you will have a cash prize of Ksh600 M. It cannot get better than this. Now it is upon everyone to play their part,” the head of state told the team.

Benni McCarthy’s charges, who open their group match against DR Congo on Sunday, August 3, 2025, at the Kasarani stadium, now literally have their ball on their court with the work cut out to make it past the preliminary stage, where they are pooled in a tricky Group A comprising five teams.

Angola. Morocco and Zambia are other members of the group.

The president’s pledge also included a Ksh60 m reward if the team reaches the quarterfinals and Ksh70 m if they reach the semi-finals of the games.

“For every game you win, every player here gets a million shillings. For every game you draw half a million shillings,” he told the players.

Ruto also outlined a different reward scheme targeting individual players. Every member of the team’s playing unit will receive Ksh1 million for every win and Ksh500 for every draw.

Thankful FKF

While reacting to the news, the Football Kenya Federation acknowledged the president and his delegation for their gesture and for taking time to visit the team.

“The Football Kenya Federation extends its sincere gratitude to His Excellency Dr William Samoei Ruto, President of the Republic of Kenya, for taking time this morning to visit the Harambee Stars camp ahead of their #CHAN2024 opener,” FFK said.

“His presence, alongside Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya, Principal Secretary Elijah Mwangi, and other senior officials, was a strong show of support and encouragement to the team,” a statement from FKF read.
