Duale forced to attend to accident victims in Kisumu

Cabinet Secretary for Health Aden Duale was forced to briefly halt his motorcade on Sunday, March 8, 2026, to assist victims of a road accident in Kisumu, after coming across the crash scene at Otonglo near the Molasses Plant.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Health, the accident occurred as the CS was travelling from Rarieda to Kisumu International Airport.

Duale immediately mobilised an emergency response after his convoy encountered the crash site, coordinating rescue efforts to ensure victims received urgent medical attention.

“The motorcade of the Cabinet Secretary for Health, Aden Duale, today stopped at the scene of a road traffic accident at Otonglo, near the Molasses Plant in Kisumu, where the Cabinet Secretary mobilised an emergency medical response to assist the victims. At the time of the incident, the Cabinet Secretary was travelling to Kisumu International Airport from Rarieda,” the statement read in part.

More than 19 injured people were evacuated from the scene and rushed to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital for treatment.

Authorities confirmed that two people died at the scene, while another victim succumbed to injuries while being transported to the hospital.

Emergency responders, local authorities and medical teams quickly moved in to stabilise victims and facilitate their transfer to hospital.

The Ministry of Health commended the swift response by rescue teams and extended condolences to the families of those who lost their lives.

“The Ministry of Health conveys its condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and wishes a quick recovery to those receiving treatment,” the ministry said in the statement.

Investigations into the cause of the accident are expected to be conducted by local authorities.
