Doctor and cardiologist, Dr Dan Gikonyo, has informed the court that he has been the personal physician to former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua for almost 20 years.

Appearing before Milimani Law Court on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, Dr Gikonyo said he was first called to see Gachagua on July 10, 2006, and has been treating him since then on several occasions, including when the former deputy president was admitted to Karen Hospital on October 17, 2024, during his impeachment hearing in the Senate.

“I am acquainted with my patient, Hon. Rigathi Gachagua, whom I have taken care of from my record, your honour… I have been a doctor to the said Hon. Rigathi Gachagua since 5:10 pm on July 10, 2006,” Gikonyo said.

The medic further confirmed that Gachagua was admitted to Karen Hospital on October 17, 2024, after experiencing chest pains.

Dr Gikonyo has revealed the details while appearing before the court together with the former deputy president, Rigathi Gachagua, and his wife, Dorcas, at the Milimani High Court for his impeachment hearing on day 3 on Wednesday, May 13, 2026.

During the day’s hearing, Dr Gikonyo has been cross-examined over his affidavit, in which he swore that the former DP was taken ill on October 17, 2024.

Gikonyo’s affidavit questioned

On May 7, 2026, Senior Counsel Tom Ojienda represented the Senate, and the Senate Speaker posed questions on Gikonyo’s affidavit.

Ojienda claimed that the doctor’s affidavit is grossly and extremely prejudicial to the third and fourth respondents (the speaker of the Senate and the Senate) because, under the doctrine of separation of powers, the Senate rendered a verdict based on no explanation given by Gachagua’s legal team.

Call to strike out Gikonyo’s affidavit.

Ojienda further told the bench that, failing to strike it, the court should then summon Gikonyo to court and cross-examine him on the affidavit.

He also pointed out a mistake in the affidavit on the dates, stating that in trying to make it, they stated that Gachagua took about a month in the hospital, arguing that maybe they meant to write three days.

“My lords and lady, this is an embarrassing affidavit, and the only way to save Dr Gikonyo and everyone here is to strike out this affidavit,” SC Ojienda submitted.
