‘Democracy needs your brain’ – KICC Chairman Irungu Nyakera rallies Kenyans to apply for IEBC jobs

Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) Chairperson Irungu Nyakera on Sunday, February 2, 2025, called on qualified Kenyans to apply for IEBC jobs.

This is after the newly appointed selection panel called on Kenyans to send their applications for the IEBC Chairperson and Commissioners.

The panel in a public notice issued on Saturday, February 1, 2025, implored interested candidates to apply for the positions by February 15.

Following the advertisement, Nyakera challenged Kenyans not to shy away from the roles. Nyakera who is also the Farmers Party leader noted that IEBC needed individuals with the right capacity to oversee the upcoming polls.

“And to the qualified to serve, for the love of God and country, please apply. Kenya and its democracy needs your brain and your loyalty to the constitution,” Nyakera’s statement read in part.

At the same time, the former Devolution Principal Secretary asked Kenyans to pray for the selection panel to pick the right candidates for the IEBC chairperson and commissioner roles.

“As you go to church today, pray that the selection panel picks the right people to fill the critical IEBC positions,” Nyakera added.

Requirements for IEBC roles

According to the notice from the selection panel, to qualify for the IEBC Chairperson position, a candidate must have at least 15 years of experience as a superior court judge or have at least 15 years of experience as a distinguished academic, judicial officer, legal practitioner, or in other legally relevant fields.

One must meet the leadership and integrity requirements outlined in Chapter Six of the Constitution.

To qualify as an IEBC commissioner, a candidate must hold a degree from a recognized university.

One must also have proven knowledge and at least 10 years of experience in electoral matters, management, finance, governance, public administration, law, ICT, or accounting.

Applicants must meet the integrity requirements under Chapter Six of the Constitution.

The procedure

The selection panel announced that all applications must be submitted with certified academic certificates, a curriculum vitae (CV), a national ID or passport, and other relevant testimonials.

The nine-member team added that all applicants must have clearance certificates from the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA), Higher Education Loans Board (HELB), Credit Reference Bureau (CRB), Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), and Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC).
