The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has provided new details linking the murder of Reverend Julius Ndumia Ngari to a criminal gang suspected of carrying out violent robberies in Nakuru County and surrounding areas.

The cleric was killed on the night of Sunday, May 3, 2026, at PCEA Tabuga Parish in Nakuru North Sub-County.

According to a press statement issued by the DCI, sustained forensic and intelligence-led investigations have connected the incident to a gang first profiled in July 2022. The group is said to conduct armed robberies while dressed in security forces attire and to use an L1A1 firearm, which was recovered by police in 2024.

Investigators further indicated that the gang is also linked to a robbery on May 1, 2026, during which Ksh600,000 was transferred from a victim’s bank account to mobile numbers associated with its members.

“The same gang has also been connected to a violent robbery on the night of May 1, 2026, during which Sh600,000 was transferred from a victim’s bank account to mobile numbers associated with the group.”

The DCI noted that the gang members are persons of interest in a series of violent attacks under review in Nakuru County.

Forensic Probe and Evidence Gathering

The DCI stated that scientific examinations are ongoing to establish whether the gang members were physically present at the crime scene.

“Advanced forensic examinations, including scientific analysis aimed at placing the suspects at the crime scene, are still ongoing to build a robust case for prosecution,” the statement read.

The press release, signed by John Marete, said detectives are working to consolidate evidence for prosecution. Authorities also confirmed that earlier arrests had been made, with two persons of interest found in possession of items believed to have been stolen from the cleric’s residence during the attack.

Investigators are also examining a wider pattern of robberies and violent incidents in the region, with indications that the same group may be involved in multiple cases under investigation.

Public Appeal and Ongoing Investigations

The DCI has urged members of the public to assist with information that may support the investigation. Citizens have been encouraged to report to the nearest police station or use the #FichuaKwaDCI hotline on 0800 722 203 or WhatsApp 0709 570 000.

The investigation comes amid heightened public concern following the murder, with calls for transparency in the handling of evidence and related materials such as CCTV footage. Police have maintained that the probe remains active and urged calm as they continue efforts to identify and apprehend all individuals involved in the killing.
