Community and political journey
Family ties remain central to coastal communities. When a parent passes, neighbours, friends, and extended family members often rally to provide support. They offer prayers, and share memories, helping the bereaved cope with immediate loss.
Omar Mwinyi first entered national politics when he was elected to represent Changamwe Constituency in the National Assembly during the 2013 Kenyan general election. His victory, under the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), was challenged in court by Philip Munge Ndolo, who came second, but the challenge was dismissed.
During his first term, he served on the Departmental Committee on Public Works, Roads, and Transport.
He was re-elected in 2017, with his win later challenged by Mohamed Mahamud Ali, a voter in the constituency. The Election Court upheld Mwinyi’s victory in a ruling on 8 February 2018. An appeal to the High Court of Kenya was also dismissed on 26 July 2018, confirming his re-election.
Omar Mwinyi secured his third term as Member of Parliament for Changamwe Constituency in the 2022 Kenyan general election held on August 2022. He ran on the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) ticket and won convincingly.
