Saboti Member of Parliament (MP) Caleb Amisi has raised questions surrounding the death of former Lugari Member of Parliament Cyrus Jirongo on Saturday, December 13, 2025, along Nakuru-Nairobi Highway.

According to Amisi’s statement posted on X on Monday, December 15, 2025, Jirongo left Karen at around 11:30 pm on the same day, after spending time with long-time friends, men who, by his account, had known him for decades and had seen him drink and still drive home safely for years, even in far less forgiving times. There was nothing, on the surface, to suggest that this night would end differently from countless others before it.

Unravelling the mystery

Yet, Amisi suggests that this night was different. Not because of recklessness, but because something about the alcohol or the circumstances was unusual. Jirongo, who knew his routes well, is said to have driven past his normal turn-off and continued smoothly along unfamiliar roads.

He navigated the Southern Bypass, passed through Kikuyu and Limuru, cut through the Kinungi stretch where mist can be unforgiving, and even drove through Gilgil in the dead of night, seeing bumps, corners, headlights and overtaking other vehicles without incident.

For nearly three hours, the journey was steady and controlled, hardly the picture of a man incapacitated behind the wheel.

The legislator wondered that it was only upon reaching Naivasha that Jirongo reportedly realised something was wrong: this was not the route home. At that point, Amisi notes, he needed to turn back. The timing matters. By then, it was around 3:00 am, an hour Amisi metaphorically describes as a shift change for “devils working overnight”, a dark, symbolic way of pointing to danger, vulnerability and the unexpected.

”He drove smoothly through the Southern Bypass, Kikuyu, Limuru, Kinungi, and the mist was well visible. Gilgil town looked like Westlands, he saw both bumps, corners, oncoming cars and overtook them smoothly, and when he arrived at Naivasha, he suddenly realised this was not the route, and he quickly needs to turn back after three sober hours of driving,” Amisi said.

Bus driver’s sacrifice

At a petrol station, as Jirongo attempted to turn, there was allegedly a “jam” of vehicles ahead of him that he had not overtaken earlier. As he tried to overtake at this point, an oncoming bus carrying 65 passengers appeared. The bus driver, according to explanations offered, claimed he deliberately chose to ram into Jirongo’s vehicle to “save” the passengers from a drunk driver.

”The driver of the oncoming bus carrying 65 ‘people’ saw him and decided he needs to hit this drunkard to save the rest, a very brilliant decision as per his explanation, but what happened to the cars on the jam that he was trying to overtake? Both drivers seem to have agreed to square their difference without cropping in other cars on the said jam.” Amisis added.

As the country mourns Cyrus Jirongo, the circumstances surrounding his demise seem unclear as the family calls for a speedy investigation.
